Root growth & root rot: How to care for your plants properly

🌱 How do you promote healthy root growth?

A strong root network is essential for your plants' growth. Here are some tips on how to stimulate root growth:

  • Optimal location conditions : Ensure sufficient light, warmth, and humidity. Warm soil significantly promotes root growth.

  • Use a permeable substrate : Loose, well-aerated soil prevents waterlogging and promotes the oxygen supply to the roots.

  • Use natural rooting aids : Willow water contains natural auxins that stimulate root growth. Make your own: Soak willow twigs in water and let them steep overnight.

  • Use root activators : Products containing microorganisms or special nutrients can further stimulate root growth. They show particularly good results in vegetable gardens.

⚠️ Detect and treat root rot

Root rot is a common cause of houseplant death. It is usually caused by waterlogging and improper care. Look out for the following symptoms:

  • Wilting of individual shoots : May indicate root rot, even if the soil still appears moist.

  • Brown, mushy roots : Healthy roots are white or light brown and firm. Rotten roots are dark, soft, or already mushy.

  • Yellowed leaves : A sign of blocked roots and impaired nutrient transport.

🛠️ How to treat root rot:

  1. Carefully remove the plant from the pot.

  2. Remove old soil and generously cut off all rotten roots.

  3. Treat healthy roots with activated charcoal, potassium permanganate, or a fungicide.

  4. Use fresh, well-draining soil and transplant into a pot with drainage holes.

  5. Water sparingly and place in a bright, well-ventilated location.
